For example, if you want to add your ringtones to your iPhone, and leave everything else unchanged, then by checking "Synchronize" only on the "Sounds" tab, and leaving the rest of the tabs unchecked, you will not lose your previously downloaded content.
In order for the files you need to get to your iPhone, add them to "iTunes" in the "Media Library" section, the one in the left panel. To do this, simply drag and drop everything you need into iTunes, the program will automatically determine the type of content, and it will appear in the necessary subsections: music, movies, sounds, etc.
