Connecting a telephone jack is one of the simple tasks that homeowners can do on their own. Optimizing the phone network at home knows no bounds, home enthusiasts are constantly looking for ways to make their homes more comfortable and place extra phone lines and phones in multiple rooms.
Installing the wall outlet is very easy and you can use your phone in almost any room.
The telephone socket and cables must be placed in such a way that they do not interfere with the public telephone network. The telephone service provider has the right to inspect and test any connector and wiring connected to communication lines in the home.
Each line of the telephone network entering a home or office is equipped with a special "main socket" installed by the telephone service provider, the consumer is prohibited from interfering with its operation and making connections.
For the production of work, you need to purchase materials: an adapter, wall sockets and cable clamps.
Installation sequence:
- Select a place to connect the telephone socket.
- Calculate wire length.
- Choose newconnector.
- Install an outlet.
- Connect a new device to the telephone wire.
- Connect a telephone line and check if it works.
Installation site and tools
Before you start the installation, you need to mark the selected place for installing the outlet in the house. First you need to consider where furniture or tables can stand so that you can carefully lay the wires.
To connect the outlet, you will need tools that must be in working condition.
Required tools are:
- Hammer.
- Small screwdriver.
- Side cutters.
- Pliers.
- Flush wire detector.
- Telecommunication cable installation tool.
If the device is installed on the 1st floor, it is recommended to lay the telephone line on the second floor outside the house along the street. This is easier to do than running cable up stairs and through numerous doorways. Do not place wires under carpets and run them under door frames. A baseboard is the best place for a safe and aesthetic placement of a telephone jack and wire. When calculating the length of the wiring, you need to remember that phones are usually equipped with a 3-meter cord.
Types of telephone cables
Telephone cable usually consists of 4-wire wire, although 6- and 8-wire wires are also not uncommon. Connection types are 2-pair, 3-pair and 4-pair. Ordinary 4-wire telephone cablehas 4 colored wires which include red, green, black and yellow. While most phones use 4 or 6 pin connectors, standard phones only use two wires. Single line telephones are designed to use the two center pins in the telephone jack. On a 4-pin connector, the outer 2 pins are not used, and on a 6-pin connector, the outer pins are not used. This is important to know when connecting the phone jack.
Types of outlets
When it comes to buying outlets, people first look at the brand and then look at the design. This is because there are manufacturers on the market who are well established in the production of electrical products. Therefore, for novice electricians, it is best to buy outlets from well-known brands.

RJ-11 connector
Let's consider the connection diagram of the RJ-11 plug.
How to connect a telephone socket? A typical RJ-11 connector has six terminals. Usually only the middle four pins are used. POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) telephone wiring typically contains two pairs of wires for two separate telephone lines. The center pins (red and green) contain the first telephone line. Business (digital) phone systems can be connected in the same way.
RJ-45 connector (DATA)
Consider the wiring diagram of the RJ-45 plug according to T-568B standards. The T-568B double standard telephone socket is the most commonly used. The connection diagram is shown using the "hookclamp" on the underside. The connector has a wiring diagram or labeled pin numbers/colours corresponding to the color code below. When connecting the RJ-45 connector, secure the connection as close as possible to the jack or plug. This ensures that the rj 11 phone jack complies with Ethernet wiring standards.
Pre-installation work
Order:
- Remove the front cover.
- The inside of the connector connects to 4 terminal screws. The wires must be red, green, black and yellow. Connect the telephone wires (red and green) to the terminals using the red and green wires. While red and green are commonly used for hotline lines, older telephones installed in homes may use other colors.
- Use a telephone line tester to make sure the wires are connected correctly. Another easy way to test the wires is to connect them to the terminals, connect the phone to the test, and listen for dial tone.
- If you plan to use a one-line phone for your second line, you must install a modified phone jack.
- Remove the front cover of the telephone jack and connect the yellow and black wires to the red and green terminals. This will move your second phone line to the center connector pins.
- If you're having trouble, use a phone line tester to make sure the new second line is active.
Incorrect wiring can lead tomalfunction or damage to the system.
Socket installation
If the telephone socket will be installed after the construction of the house, then it is best to choose surface sockets. They must be mounted on a wall or baseboard with appropriate fasteners. Wear protective goggles while drilling. Before attaching the socket to the wall, make sure to select a section of the wall that does not contain hidden wires or electrical cables, they are checked with a hidden wire detector.
After the location for the outlet is selected, the appropriate hole for the cable entry is carefully cut out with a sharp knife. Install the socket in place using two screws.
The mounting holes in the jack box are cut to allow both horizontal and vertical installation before the screws are fully tightened. Secure the cable carefully so as not to puncture or damage it. A damaged cable may cause equipment malfunction or damage to the communication system and should therefore be replaced.
Wiring
Consider the connection of the telephone socket 6p4c. Structurally, it is designed in such a way that stripping or soldering of wires is not required. They are connected by a tool for connecting telecommunication cables. It is not necessary to insert the wires into the sockets using anything other than special tools. When performing work, it is necessary to use safety glasses, since the ends of the wires canfly off and injure your eyes.
Leaving a small amount of slack in the wire, lay the wire to be laid in the corresponding slot of the terminal. A strong clamp with a tool forces the wire to firmly connect to the plug of the connector, thereby making the connection. If two cables are to be connected to the jack, the second wire must be inserted into the same terminal.
Each wire must be inserted separately, not at the same time. Make sure the wires are fully inserted into the plug, one on top of the other. The connector is designed for only two cables. If two wires are to be connected to the same terminal, make sure the wire colors from each cable match.
Basic Installation Guidelines
In order to avoid safety violations and for the correct installation of the device, you must adhere to the following rules:
- The new plug must not have more than 50 meters of cable from the main outlet.
- No matter how many jacks a phone line has, the number of actual handsets that can be connected to it is limited to 4.
- Do not place extension sockets or junction boxes on doors or where moisture or condensation may occur (such as a shower or bathroom).
- You can only place telephone wiring in jacks or junction boxes.
- Telephone socket and cable must be at least 5 cm away from electrical wiring and power outlet to avoid electricalinterference.
- Always unplug the adapter from the main outlet before modifying or adding wiring to the telephone circuit.
Testing
After the completion of the installation work, you need to test the telephone line and the installed socket for operability. You can check the ringtones in each jack, and then ask a friend to call the installed telephone set back to make sure that it is ringing. If the phone does not ring and the phone jack is connected correctly, then you need to check the communication lines with a multimeter.
Procedure:
- Disconnect phone lines to be tested from test jacks. Once disconnected, the telephone lines will be fully open and ready for testing.
- Wait a minute until the telephone lines are completely disconnected.
- Set the DMM to continuous mode.
- Connect the DMM test leads together.
- If the multimeter is working properly, it will display a reading on its digital screen and beep.
- Connect one of the DMMs to one telephone wire and connect the other wire to the other telephone wire.
- If the multimeter does not detect continuity, the telephone lines are not touching.
- If it detects continuity, the telephone lines will not work properly.
- Repeat the test for each pair of phone lines. Once each pair has been tested, you canwill determine which telephone lines are working and which are not.
