Modern lighting technologies do not stand still and are constantly evolving. The appearance is improved, the size is reduced and the energy consumption for powering these devices is reduced. The old incandescent lamps are gradually moving aside, making way for new energy-saving ones, and inert gases have also been widely used in lighting signs and advertisements. One of these modern devices is a neon cord used for lighting. Below we will consider the features of its use.

What is neon cord?

It is a wire filled with an inert gas - neon. Cold neon has physical properties similar to conventional electrical cable. Such a flexible neon cord consumes less electricity and is powered by a 12 V mains supply or by batteries that are combined into a battery with a total voltage of 12 V. The neon wire is waterproof andelectrically safe at work. Light is emitted from the cord 360° along its entire length. For example, LED strips only illuminate 120° and pointwise from each LED.

Design and principle of operation

The 12 volt flexible neon cord has a simple design and a principle of operation that is not difficult for an ordinary person to understand. The construction of the wire consists of a copper core coated with a phosphor with a neon compound. A thin copper spiral is wound over the phosphor. When an electric current passes through a copper core and a spiral wound on a phosphor, a magnetic field is created. It emits a glow. This phenomenon is called electroluminescence.

To add color to the copper wire and the phosphor, a transparent sheath is applied. Depending on personal wishes, it is painted in various colors. Moreover, the greatest brightness stands out with a white cold glow.

The first generations of neon lights were not widely used due to their low brightness. But thanks to modern developments, it was possible to achieve the greatest emission of light while using less energy.

Neon cord has a number of advantages over other light sources:

  • Low power consumption. It consumes 10-15 W per meter of length. The amount of electricity consumed depends on the thickness of the copper core.
  • Increased resistance to moisture and water due to PVC insulation. This property allows the cord to be used both inside the equipment andoutside, with street lighting.
  • Large range of different lengths, as well as the ability to cut and connect the cord, depending on design decisions.
  • During operation, the wire does not heat up, which makes it safe to use. It is also characterized by increased flexibility, which allows you to install the wire according to the application. Glow all 360° around the wire, unlike other light sources.
  • Different color palette. There are up to 10 shades marked on the market.
  • Ability to manufacture a rigid structure, depending on the operating conditions.

Application

Flexible neon cord is used in car tuning. Used for decoration inside the car interior and outside. The cord has also found application in dyeing clothes. Such things are used in spectacular dance numbers. Ideal for decorating bicycles and motor vehicles, where it does not require special complexity and additional power sources. The cord has also been used in directional lighting, street sign lighting at night.

It is worth mentioning the design application. With the help of a neon cord, it became possible to implement the most daring and creative solutions. For example, it is possible to illuminate shop windows and advertising signs without high energy and financial costs.
