The idea of introducing a single number for all rescue services in Russia appeared back in 2010. In December, the President signed a decree, according to which one contact phone number was to be recognized, which can be contacted in case of any emergency. Such joint work is planned until 2017, after which only the emergency call 112.
The next step towards the creation of a single number was carried out at the end of 2012. At that time, Putin signed a decree, according toto which the creation of one system for calling any emergency service was to begin. The number, which will only accept emergency calls, was determined in March 2013.
From mobile or landline?
It has long been possible to call the rescue service from a cell phone by dialing 112. But this number has become publicly available since August 12, 2013. Until that date, the specified number worked in pilot mode in certain subjects of the Federation. It was available in the Astrakhan and Kursk regions, in Tatarstan and other regions.
At the same time, it is worth noting that until 2017, an emergency call is also available at the usual numbers: 01 for the fire department, 02 for the police, 03 for the arrival of an ambulance, 04 for calling the gas workers. True, in this format, these numbers will most likely be valid only until the end of 2014. At present, it is better to start getting used to the new input format: first you need to put the number 1. That is, in order to call an ambulance from your phone, it is better to dial 103.

The first single emergency number was introduced in the UK in 1937. From that moment on, it was possible to get through to the police, fire department or doctors by dialing 999.
In Australia, since 1961, all emergency calls are accepted by number 000. At first, the service worked only in big cities, but in the 80s it already covered the entire territory of the country. In New Zealand, a single contact telephone was introduced in 1958. The government decided that the most convenient way in an emergency would be to dial 111.
The most famous emergency service in the US did not start operating until 1968. Even many Russians know that in order to call rescuers in the States, you need to dial 911. It is worth noting that using this number throughout the countrybegan only by the end of the 80s.
