Many consider the iPhone 4 to be the best model Apple has ever released. It combines beauty and functionality. The only drawback is that it does not evolve with the times. Presented not so long ago, iOS 10 on the “fours”, of course, is not available. But users may be wondering how to update the iPhone 4 to iOS 8 to catch up on innovations at least partially.
However, you may have heard a lot of advice that it is better to stay on the old version of the firmware. Why is there such an opinion? Is the “eighth axis” really contraindicated for “fours”? Or do you just need to be able to properly configure your device?
How to prepare your phone for iOS 8?
If no doubt stops you, you still shouldn't rush to upgrade your iPhone 4 to iOS 8 right here and now. To begin with, it is worth preparing the device, which will allow you to go through the upgrade process without unpleasant consequences.
- Whatever version of the "axis" you upgrade to, be sure to check the compatibility for your"device". In this case, we are talking about the eighth iOS. And as we see in the picture, it suits us.
- View the apps installed on your phone. Do you need all of them? Uninstalling unnecessary apps and updating them to the latest versions is optional but highly recommended.
- Be sure to back up! The functionality of the iPhone is configured in such a way that backups occur from time to time anyway. But before a risky update, it's better to play it safe twice. When you have the choice to create a restore using iTunes or directly on your phone thanks to iCloud, it's best to use both options.
How to update the firmware using a computer?
If you decide to update "iPhone 4" to iOS 8, it is better to do it using your computer. All you need is a lightning cable and iTunes installed. Before starting the manipulation, it is worth updating the program itself. You need to download the latest version from the official website of the manufacturer.
Further, the procedure is outrageously simple:
- You connect your Applephone to your computer with a cable.
- Tunes usually starts automatically. Or you can open it without waiting.
- Wait about a minute for the iPhone to be "discovered".
- As soon as authorization occurs, a mobile phone icon will appear in the top bar. When you click on it, the settings menu will open.
- You obviously need an item"refresh". Click on it, read and confirm the user agreement.
- After the end of the "procedure", the phone will reboot itself, after which it will be ready for use in normal mode.
How to update "iPhone 4" to iOS 8 without a computer?
As already mentioned, it is better to update "iPhone 4" to iOS 8 through a computer to avoid unnecessary problems. Firstly, the device may short out during the recovery process (you will learn why and what to do in the next section). Secondly, your battery may simply run out, which will interrupt the update. To prevent this from happening, there is even a “fuse”: when the charge is up to 50%, the “apple phone” will not download the firmware update.
But if you have no other choice, of course, the phone can be "upgraded" using Wi-Fi:
- Go to your phone settings. You need the "Basic" section, the item "Software Update".
- After you click on this inscription, the iPhone itself initiates a search for updates.
- Further, the process is intuitive: you click on "Download and install", read and confirm the agreement and wait for the result.
- Get ready: updating firmware is not a quick process. It will take at least 30 minutes, during which the phone cannot be used.
- Then the smartphone will reboot itself, and then it will start installing a new version of the “axis”. Literally in 7-10 minutes the phone can be used normally.
What can beTrouble updating over Wi-Fi?
Users who ignore the advice to update firmware via computer sometimes face a serious problem. Their "iPhone 4" falls into the so-called "loop", or permanent recovery mode. At the same time, the “apple” or the cable connection icon is lit on the screen. The device itself becomes absolutely useless.
The reason for this failure is quite simple. The new firmware "weighs" about 1 gigabyte (and this is just the archive itself). In order to update the "apple phone", you need to have at least 5-6 more gigabytes at your disposal. Simple arithmetic demonstrates that without first thoroughly cleaning the device, you simply do not have enough memory to perform an “upgrade”. From such a situation, the phone can send itself to recover, after which it closes in this mode forever.
Of course, the problem can be solved. Moreover, even do it without contacting the service center - through iTunes. But there is a serious minus: in this case, absolutely all user data will be lost. That is why one of the points of preparation for recovery is to create a backup copy.
Should I update the Quartet's firmware?
When the letter "S" is present in the model name, this indicates the characteristic "speed", that is, speed. However, if an iPhone 4S is upgraded to iOS 8, this designation is no longer valid. What can we say about the usual "iPhone 4". Is everything really so critical, and why experienced people do not recommend updating the firmware on this modelphone number?
Speed tests show that the iPhone 4 with the updated Axis is slightly slower than iOS 7. The differences are small, but in the aggregate they will leave an annoying experience using the device. And what do you get in return? A small set of features that owners of devices on iOS 8 rarely use, several app updates, slightly faster access to the camera. Doesn't sound very enticing. That is why those who have carefully analyzed the feasibility of such a step or managed to take it, are advised not to update the Quartet's firmware.
If you are thinking about updating your iPhone 4 to iOS 8 just because the device has become worse over time, such a step will not solve your problems. The fourth "apple phone" is indeed considered a reliable classic, but over the six years of its existence, the obsolescence of technology is inevitable.
Try to "overclock" the device using other methods. If the result still categorically does not suit you, it makes sense to go to the store for a new smartphone. Or at least look for a used version of a newer model.
