Vintage typewriter fonts are widely used in web design today. They give the text elegance and special charm, but, of course, they are not applicable in all cases.
Historical background
Before the advent of computer systems, typewriters were used for typing. They were created mainly for rewriting securities and manuscripts. The typewriter font is not just uneven and a little blurry. When one of the first inventors of this device, M. Alisov, presented his brainchild, many did not like it, since the characters were standard even, like from a printing house. This created some difficulties in typing documents, they had to be censored. Other inventors took this mistake into account, and the typewriter font became what we know it now.
Typewriters use the so-called monospace font, which is distinguished by the same width of characters. It is considered to be less readable than the proportional type used in modern printing. But even today he meetsin programming, when writing source codes, movie scripts are written in this font. By the way, license plates are also written in monospace font.
To save space and reduce the size of the device, many keys were often removed. For example, numbers were replaced with homographic letters, hyphens and dashes were the same, as were quotation marks.
Use
For most of the 20th century, all official government documents were typewritten, and publishing houses also required printed texts to be brought in, as this greatly facilitated the work of typesetters.
In the middle of the twentieth century, with the advent of personal computers, typewriters are a thing of the past. But the typewriter font is still actively used by designers. It looks great in many styles, gives a vintage effect. It gives the impression of being man-made, not made by a soulless machine.
What is the typewriter font called?
Currently there are more than 15 varieties for Photoshop. Each typewriter font for Photoshop imitates either the style of a particular device, or writing in different publications (newspapers, printing houses). Many styles are available in both Cyrillic and Latin. Font B52 looks the most similar, with its large spacing and worn effect. There are other fonts, for example:
- DS Moster has a rather interesting effect where some characters are typed bolder. And the letters are not located exactly in the line, but “dance”, making the text veryrealistic.
- Underwood completely copies the writing style of the typewriter of the same name.
- Harting and 1942 Report look very worn, as if the paint in the typewriter is starting to run low.
- The Junkos Typewriter is highly stylized, the letters vary in size and jagged, and there are many "ink smudges".
- Type Writer, Type wrong and King are closer to computer or typographic typesetting, they are clear, even and without small spots.
- Old Newspaper is similar to the style of newspaper printing in the early 20th century.
Today we have a huge number of opportunities. Fonts are used almost everywhere, from government documents to advertising and art. The typewriter font will give a vintage look to any website or image.
